Spiritual neuroscience is the science of how to use our brains to  integrate spirituality into our everyday lives. We evolved our  brain over 200,000 years ago, but it did not come with an owner’s manual.  We download that manual for living, ironically, only at the end of life, while we are in the process of dying! That manual has a specific message for us all: This life is about learning to love and to be loved. The message of the near death experience is clear: each one of us is on a unique spiritual journey consisting of a specific lesson of love to be learned. We see this in the life review; so often people are shown how small acts of kindness were the most important aspects of their life.
The importance of the near death experience is what it teaches us about living. Each one of us, from the most vicious sociopath to the most loving saint is here to learn specific lessons of love. The science of the near death experience validates this statement. Spiritual neuroscience teaches how to use our brains to contact the divine that is both surrounds us and is within us.

BEFORE WE CAN KNOW IF THE NDE IS REAL, WE HAVE TO ESTABLISH WHAT "REAL" MEANS.
We start with learning how the brain creates its model of reality. Our eyes are not videocameras, nor are our ears microphones. Instead, we exist within a timeless spaceless electromagnetic field. Our bodies' biological sensors sample that energy and convert the information into bioelectrical signals which travel to the brain. The brain then takes those signals and creates a mental model of reality. If, for example, a blind person receives visual signals presented to the skin via a specialized tactile vest, that person will be able to see. The brain creates a visual model of reality when presented with visual information regardless of its source.

Our brain creates the mental model we think of as "real" from the timeless spaceless electromagnetic field that we are embedded in and surrounds us. As an example, even colors are invented by the brain and are not found in nature!  Since our brains are very similar, we all create similar mental models and then mutually define what we call "real". For example, we spend hours teaching our children what is the color red. This is why spiritual perceptions are so difficult to understand as "real" as they are not part of the mutually agreed upon reality we have all taught ourselves to perceive. They are highly individual perceptions which don't translate well when described to others, often seeming "unreal"

Not only is materialism dead as a philosophy, there is no longer even a well accepted definition of matter.
The materialistic scientific philosophy is that reality is made of matter. Matter is a substance that has mass and volume. However, matter is composed of atoms which are made of interacting subatomic particles. These subatomic particles do not even have well defined positions or sizes, and when unobserved, remain as probabilities rather than fixed solid particles.  It is the fundamental interactions between these subatomic entities which do not have a size or volume in the ordinary sense of the world. In fact, when unobserved, they are best seen as wave functions. These subatomic interactions create the illusion of matter we think is real.​

1/f fluctuations are the essence of consciousness as fascilitated by the brain- Professor Wayne Kirby ​

The neurons in our brains do not fire randomly but according to precise mathematical patterns defined as 1/f fluctuations and other hidden patterns in the mathematics of chaos. Since these are found at the quantum level, and throughout nature, the physical world, and animal and human behavior, they speak to a deeper "non material" basis to reality.  In theory, all aspects of reality are linked through their 1/f characteristics.

These 1/f chaotic systems can communicate with each other, and influence each other's behavior. Our own research has documented that the human mind when involved in remote viewing or spiritual healing can influence the behavior of a true random number generator based on the movement of electrons in a semi-conductor, a device developed by Princeton University Department of Engineering. There is no reason to doubt that our thoughts can influence other chaotic systems which explains heart math technology which can cause the synchronization of the heart beats of people who interact at a distance.

The finding of 1/f patterns in everything, from the flow of electrons to the rhythms of the ocean and our own brain function means that when those who have NDEs say everything is connected, now we know how!  1/f systems are information systems which communicate with each other.

One proof of our theory is that 1/f sound therapies can help heal autism!

Our brains are near chaotic systems (see critical brain theory) which function best when exhibiting 1/f patterns.  Autistic children have disordered 1/f patterns which put them out of synch with other people whose brains do function with 1/f patterns. I/f patterns are the underlying harmony in all aspects of reality so brains which are not wired for 1/f waveforms become out of synch, especially with other human beings.
When their brains are bathed in specialized music based on 1/f rhythms, they have profound improvements in relating to other people including better eye contact and social skills, as normal 1/f function is restored. ​

​ I published Where God Lives which outlines the neuroscience of how we are connected to the divine. I proposed that we have a "God Spot" in our right temporal lobe which connects us to the informational Universe. I have presented these concepts to my fellow scientists in peer reviewed journals. The proof that such a connection exists is that we can remote view, which is the obtaining of information from sources beyond our ordinary senses. Since I published Where God Lives in 2004, there has been no scientific criticism refuting the concept, but rather several books which expand the idea of the spiritual brain, including Mario Beuregard's The Spiritual Brain and Roger Nelson's The Spiritual Doorway to the Brain.​
Scientists now describe complex systems theory and information theory as the leading scientific explanations for the patterns of reality. Mathematicians describe fractile mathematical patterns and 1/f fluctuations as the basis of patterns found in nature.  New Age healers speak of energy patterns and religious thinkers speak of an all knowing God:, Paul spoke of faith as the "invisible reality".  All of these describe immaterial aspects of nature which in turn dictate patterns in material reality.  Math is the glue of reality. The Greek philosopher Pythagorus was one of the first to show that something that we perceive with our senses  has underneath it an mathematical pattern, such as harmonies which underlie the relationships of the lengths of a musical instruments strings.  He simply used different terms than the religious mystics who insist hidden immaterial concepts such as "god" underlie reality. or scientists who describe information theory as "anything in connection with or refers to something beyond itself so that its full nature can be revealed in that connection".

Spiritual neuroscience is the science of the soul:

​As a physician, I am primarily interested in the use of spiritual neuroscience in new therapies and strategies which are revolutionizing the treatment of PTSD and addiction. Specific applications of spiritual neuroscience are:
  1. Understanding healthy grieving and surviving the painful transformation of loss.
  2. Treatment strategies for PTSD and survivors of abuse and trauma.
  3. Learning to use advanced meditative techniques to rewrite dysfunctional life stories. For example, someone plagued with an inner recurrent thought “I am not loved” or “I am not good enough” can rewrite that story to be "I am not loved YET', or "I have done my best against incredible hardships".
  4. Using yoga not just as an aerobic exercise but as a specific technology for transformation.
  5. Navigating the numerous transformations we all experience throughout our lives, including the transition from adolescence to adulthood and dealing with the crises and losses of middle age
​Far too often, debates over the science of spirituality involve discussions of the science of the 19th century arguing against philosophies based on that same out of date science.  These videos will help begin the process of bringing us up to date on the science of spirituality of the 21st century.  We can't understand how we use our brain to talk to God or have spiritual visions until we understand how the brain actually works.  Spiritual visions, facilitated by the God spot and other brain structures dedicated to spirituality are just as real as the color red, also created by specific areas in the brain. Colors do not exist in nature, we invent them in our brain yet we don't doubt they are real.
