Yoga is spiritual and non religious. It was developed prior to the birth of the great religions in the Axial Age. Dr. Morse was raised in the Jewish faith. He became a Christian while in prison after receiving grace one day while practicing his daily yoga routine. That was Dr. Morse's path. Your path (or way) is for you to find. We are all here to learn lessons of love, according to what the children who had near death experiences told Dr. Morse. We each have our own unique lessons to learn.

Kundalini Yoga was developed hundreds of years before the Axial Age, a time of major awakening roughly 2000 years ago.. The Axial Age was the time of the birth of the world’s great religions and philosophies, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Plato, Socrates, Lao Tzu, Confucianism and Islam. It was a short period of time, about 600 years, yet humanity became transformed.

Kundalini Yoga was the first wave of that great awakening. It was mentioned in the Vedic writings as far back as 500 to 1000 BCE. Historical records document that it is one of the oldest sciences of energy and spiritual philosophy.

             Kundalini Yoga was brought to the West by an extraordinary man, Yogi Bhajan. The son of a physician, he began his yoga training at age 8. His upbringing was hardly that of a secluded yogi hiding in a cave. Instead he was a star athlete, a man who lived in the real world as a devoted husband and father, received a PhD in Economics and supervised the creation of the IRS in India. In 1968, he came to the West, teaching Kundalini Yoga first at the University of Toronto. Yogi Bhajan then went on to found the Kundalini Research Institute in Santa Cruz, New Mexico.  He was a busnessman not a hermit.
             I cannot help but to contrast him with Siddhartha Gautama who left his wife and child and ordinary responsibilities to become the Buddha practicing in the forests of India. The Buddha isolated himself from the real world whereas Yogi Bhajan immersed himself in the real world. Kundalini Yoga is a spiritual tool we incorporate into our everyday lives to reduce stress, learn to respond instead of reacting, become more creative, and to live a spiritual life in the workplace and home environments. Kundalini Yoga provides us with practical tools to use in our daily lives. The Masters of Consciousness, the Tibetan Buddists, isolated themselves from the world for over 1500 years until Tibet was conquered by China in the 1950s. Yoga is a practice for those who live in the world.  It addresses real problems. It is one of the tools used by the Recidivism Prevention Group as it gives the ex-incarcerated the mental discipline to conquer addiction, find and keep a job, and do the hard work of keeping a family together.

While incarcerated, I studied the text Sacred Therapies by David Shannahoff-Khalsa, the Kundalini Handbook for Mental Health treatment. This text has specific Kundalini exercises (known as Kriyas) for everything from PTSD to Bipolar Disorder to Autism and Asperger’s syndrome. The book is anchored by dozens of references, many of them the results of randomized controlled trials published in peer reviewed journals.
The men I spent time with were thirsty sponges with regards to spirituality. Here is but a small selection of the over 300 books I had with me in prison. Although prison regulations only permit 8 books per inmate, the Correctional Officers and their superiors realized the value of what I was accomplishing and I was permitted to have numerous spiritual books. These men, most of whom did not have GEDs, devoured complex texts such as Mind Training: The Great Collection, Sacred Therapies and other texts on Kundalini Yoga and meditation.  I did not try to talk my fellow inmates into doing meditation and yoga with me. Quite the contrary, I was constantly asked to "help me to think differently" as one of my friends put it.
“Three mantras you should never say: 
1) I don’t know
2) I’m not ready
3) I can’t do it.

Mantras to repeat daily:
“Failure is only a step on the way to success”.
The most powerful word in the English language is "yet" as in "I haven't (stopped using drugs, kept a job, etc) YET"
These quotes from Yogi Bhajan inspired my fellow inmates who had never been exposed to these sorts of positive messages.  
Dr. Morse was a student at the Lighthouse Yoga Center and took the rigorous Level One Training to be a Kundalini Yoga Instructor.

Dr. Morse's spiritual name is Bachan Seva Singh. Bachan means promise; keeping one’s word and one whose word has power. Seva is devotional service. All males receive the name Singh -- the Lion of God who walks with grace and courage throughout his life. Yogi Bhajan taught that every man can attain this divine state and encouraged all to manifest it.
